Pastels

A Bit About Me

From childhood afternoons sketching beneath the live oaks of rural South Texas, I have been captivated by the quiet poetry of nature. Working in pastel allows me to explore light, movement, and atmosphere with immediacy and sensitivity.

I am drawn to landscapes with mountains, trees or water; skies; flora; and the subtle stories held in everyday surroundings, whether close to home in Wyldwood, Texas, or discovered in travels across the United States and abroad.

Through my work, I seek to invite viewers into moments of stillness, beauty, and wonder— celebrating the emotional connection we share with nature and the places that shape our memories and spirit.

About Soft Pastels...
Before working in soft pastels, I really had no idea of what they were. Turns out, artist grade pastels have the highest pigment to binder ratio than any other medium. They are archival which means they are made to last 100 years! Unlike oil which can yellow or watercolors that may fade, soft pastel paintings last for generations. The pastel art you collect now will look the same for years to come.

All of my pastel paintings are created with artist grade pastels with no fixative to change the texture or color of the brilliant pigments. Care has been taken to frame them under glass to further protect them. Generally, there are three types of glass used:
Regular: no UV protection; good for rooms with low natural light Conservation Clear: 99% UV protection from light, allows some reflections Museum Glass: 99%+ UV protection with almost zero reflections. This is the highest rated art glass.

Thank you for taking a moment to view and appreciate the pastel paintings I have created! ~-joycelyn
