MAY FEATURED ARTIST
Alejandro Mandel - Santiago, CHILE
Bio and Representative Works
My work expresses two aspects of life, one is to record the changes that I see in my environment, looking at them in a historical perspective. I paint the landscape that exists around me, trying to place it in a historical context so I can understand it. However my understanding is conditioned by my experience as a Latin American and an immigrant artist. As an immigrant I have a particular perspective on reality. The view of the immigrant is one of a lack of belonging that local people have. As immigrants we see things from an outsider’s perspective. As a Latin American artist I see the social and political aspects of events taking place around me.
The second aspect of my work is concerned with art history and how it conditions the way I look at art. This specific group of works describes the changes that occurred to the typography, the erosion of the land, and the destruction that is left behind by development. The visual aspect of the paintings is influenced by such artists as Corot and Corbet. Like Corbet’s paintings my work is not only descriptive of nature, but also a protest against its destruction.
Alejandro was born in Santiago, Chile. He studied art in Chile, Israel and the United States. He has a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in California and a MFA from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
